That night it rained and rained and rained. No one said anything, but we were all thinking it, parts of the course would be unrideable. With a early rise and some pancakes everyone managed to get to the course and prepare for their races. It was funny to see all of the endurance and sport racers come down the start looking all clean and sharp and then mostly unrecognizable the second time around.
My race started with a quick pace up the road and onto the fire tower climb. I was sitting second wheel going into the first single track section where i managed to ride the first hill but got held up on the second one. I was still in second when we hit the new single track, but got held up by an endurance racer on that last log and lost my momentum going into the grass. I lost some ground and Chris took advantage of it. He went hard and i tried to respond. I slipped in the mud and banged my knee. It was hurting pretty bad and I lost even more time. I didn't catch him until the switch back descent that wasn't rideable. I road with him most of the remainder of the 1st lap. At the end he had to stop and clear some mud out of his tires. I made a move and created some distance between us. After that for the next lap and a half i road by myself. I felt great until the third lap when i would have to get off and run. My legs felt heavy and i couldn't move as quickly as i needed. I gave up one position on the final lap and managed to hold on for second place in the 19-34 expert class. My bike and I were so muddy we were almost non moveable. The race was super fun, even though it was muddy, and everyone had a good time!!
